The project
The aim of this project was to create a self-evaluation tool which supports practitioners’ professional development in languages learning and teaching.
It has been developed through a cross-sector partnership between the University of Edinburgh School of Education and the South-East Improvement Collaborative Local Authorities; The City of Edinburgh, East Lothian, Fife, Midlothian and Scottish Borders Councils. Each stage of the project has involved academic researchers, lead local authority officers, senior school leaders, practitioners, and learners.
The development stages have included:
- International literature review
- School research visits
- Practitioner-researcher workshops
- Design and drafting of the tool
- National stakeholder engagement and evaluation
- Web design and development
Through these development stages we have collaborated to research practice and to identify key themes, questions, and challenges in languages learning and teaching. We then sought to explore solutions to these by drawing on research and team expertise. The key outcomes were to provide robust research-based guidance to inform improvement and to promote high-quality language learning experiences for children and young people.
